You Are My God...

Pain.

It's everywhere, all around us. No one is immune to its wrath. Lately it's been on my mind. Pain, that is. The pain of this world. Just because I believe in the God that created this world doesn't mean that that pain is avoidable. I truly believe that God uses our pain and suffering as a way to draw us closer to Him, I just don't like it very much.

Whether it's physical like the pain that tears at my body every day......

or emotional, like the pain of a hurting marriage.....

or a baby lost whose mommy and daddy never got to meet their sweet face.....

or that of an orphan so far away that we'll probably never see them or have to hold their starving little body in our arms and feel how much they truly hurt.....

whatever kind of pain it is, there is a God who longs to hold us close through it all.

Have you ever felt so desperate that it took every bit of strength you had left to just breathe in and breathe out? I have.

Have you ever felt like you've cried out to God....begged him and gotten no response? I have.

Have you ever questioned God's plan for your life and wondered how "this" could possibly be what he wanted for you? I have.

In spite of all the pain this world can offer, it's so amazing to know without a doubt that there is a God who is mine. Sometimes it's easy to trust in Him and praise him through the pain, and other times it takes a conscious effort to raise "trembling hands" and ask him to help us trust in who He is.

I came across THIS SONG today and it just absolutely spoke to me. I turned it up loud, like um....very loud.....I just closed my eyes and let it wash over me. I hope you have 5 minutes today to just be still.....turn it up loud, close your eyes and just let the words speak to you. It's pretty sweet.......

Ali Grace (aka Punky)

My sweet Ali.....

Where have the last 8 1/2 months gone....you are the sweetest little thing there ever was. I could smell your crazy addictive smell all day long, and squeeze your chubby little body constantly. There is no way I can get enough of you. You have completely and totally captured your entire family's hearts. Your big brothers are absolutely in love with you. They love to make you giggle and squeal. Your eyes light up and a huge grin covers your face when you spot one of them. It's absolutely precious.

I used to say you were a total momma's girl but you've really got a thing for your daddy now too. You love to 'wrestle' and cuddle with daddy and you just canNOT control yourself when he beat boxes for you. You loooooove to dance and shake your head to daddy's silly songs. Lately:

- you've started to crawl. The funniest part is you never army crawled, never scooted, barely even rolled and one day you just went from a sitting position to all fours and started crawling around the room. You are one of a kind!

- you have one little tooth but can eat like a big girl! You never even ate baby food. I mushed things up for a couple weeks and then switched straight to table food. Some of your favorites are: spaghetti, toast with butter, green beans, and grilled chicken breast. Crazy baby!!

- you are very quiet...hmm, wonder how long that will last? You have daddy's laid back/chill personality. You only talk when YOU feel like talking. Most days you're very quiet and content. But, if you're in a mood, watch out cuz you can yell and chat with the best of 'em.

- you sleep through the night like a champ. It took some crying and working with you but you are SUCH a good little sleeper.

We are having so much fun watching you change every day. God knew what he was doing when he brought a little Miss into this family full of boys. They're all head over heals for you. And I? Well, I can't imagine life without you.....

My Job

So lately I've really been struggling with my "job". My job as homemaker/mom/family manager/wife..whatever-you-wanna-call-it. Basically, I think I haven't really ever realized how much I need structure and how much I thrive on the feeling of accomplishment. When I worked outside the home I was very good at my job (not tootin' my own horn here, just being honest). I was "that" girl at work. The one who always had my ducks in a row, always got everything accomplished during my day, was very organized. People relied on me every day and I kinda liked that. I was a manager before I left my job and I had lots of "power" when it came to decision-making and I enjoyed managing my people.

Now, don't get me wrong. I HATED my job...hated it with a capitol H...I dreamed every.single.day about being home with my kids and leaving the corporate world behind. Far, far behind. Leaving my job and deciding to be a full-time mom was THE best decision I've ever made. But, sometimes I feel like in the last 3 years since I've been home full-time I just don't know what to do with myself. I wander around the house trying to figure out what to do next and never feel like I'm even making a dent in all of the gazillion things that need to get done every single day. I want to spend quality time with all 3 kids, I want to play WITH my kids, not just ignore them while they play. I want to take them on fun outings, have play dates with their friends. But, I also want a clean, warm, welcoming home.

I need to do the laundry, keep up with the household chores, clean the bathrooms, cook healthy meals, pay the bills and about a million other things. So, lately I've been trying to figure out a better, more efficient way to get things done and not feel totally and completely overwhelmed all the time. I think this momma is craving some order and structure.

I've decided that if this was a "real" job, ya know...one where I had a boss and got a paycheck and a quarterly review....um, ya...I think I woulda gotten fired about 2 years ago. Now, let me be really clear here. I am NOT for one second saying that there is any way possible to be the perfect stay at home mom. I will never feel like I'm doing enough, I know that. As moms, I think the guilt thing is just innate. I know my house will not always be the cleanest, most orderly on the block and my kids won't be the perfect children. I'll probably always have something that gets left undone at the end of each day (actually probably more than 1 thing, try maybe 10 things), and that's ok. But, I DO want to feel like there is some order to this chaos. I think there's a happy medium.

So, just like lots of us give our kids routines, rules, and chores, I've decided to do something similar for myself. Kind of a guideline for my days. Something that will give me some structure and help me see on paper where I'm going during the day. I have literally broken down my day by 1/2 hour increments and scheduled it out. Obviously, I won't always stick to that by the minute, and that's not the point. It's just a guideline. Then, I came up with Daily, Weekly, and Monthly tasks. Things that absolutely have to be done daily (like wiping down kitchen counters, vacuuming kitchen floor, run dishwasher, sort mail, one load of laundry, workout, etc), then things that can be done weekly (vacuum, dust, clean bathrooms, etc), and things that can be done monthly (dust ceiling fans, clean coffee pot, vacuum blinds, etc) and put it all together and came up with something I could live with.

I've been working with it the last few days and I LOVE IT! Yes, it's kind of anal-retentive and really, that's so not me. But, for some reason this is working for me. I no longer have a day FULL of 10 loads of laundry spilling out of my laundry room making me want run screaming from my house. I've been cleaning the kitchen up after each meal and running the dishwasher when it NEEDS to run instead of having a counter full of dishes with food caked all over them because I was tending to the 10 loads of laundry (that was spilling out of my laundry room). I have been sitting and reading and playing with the boys more because I'm not vacuuming and dusting and changing bed sheets and paying bills and scrubbing toilets and running around in circles all day long. There is order to the chaos and it feels good.

I never thought I would need a black and white piece of paper posted to the side of my fridge to tell me when to put a load of laundry in, and when to wipe down my kitchen counter in order to make me feel like I was doing a better job at this stay-at-home-mom thing. But, it's working for me....for now.

PS - Scott looked at my 'scedule' the other day and goes "holy crap woman, I would NEVER be able to do all that stuff in one day".....PSHHHH....that's right buddy, you wouldn't. That's why I'm the mom!! =)

It's a New Year

I'm not a BIG New Year's Resolution type person but I do use the "new year" as an excuse to kind of re-evaluate my priorities, think about what I really want to do, what I wish I would have done last year, what things I've procrastinated on, etc. I feel like 2010 was such a crazy, full year. Full of good things, bad things, stressful things, wonderful blessings and just all around craziness. I want to take the time to slow down and really be intentional about 2011. God has given us only so many days here on this earth and although my eternity will be spent in a much.much.much better place, I do still want to make my time here on earth "count". Otherwise, really.....what's the point of even being here at all? Just a few of the random thoughts I've been having lately:

.....I want to be more regular with this blog so that I can look back at it in years to come and remember the little things my silly kids did. I've even heard of taking a year's worth of blog posts and having them made into a book, or journal. How awesome would that be? very cool....

.....We really, really want to sell our house in Waukee and move to the "country". We soooooo want land, acres....space. We just aren't town people and although I want to be close to the big city (haha) I really want to be out on an acreage somewhere. We believe that God will be taking us there in 2011.

.....I want to learn to be more patient with my children. There are days when I feel like the.worst.mother.EVER....I get so disappointed in myself and the way that I lash out at them in anger. Lord, help me learn to be patient.

.....I want to be more intentional about "loving" my husband. I love him SO MUCH! There really aren't words to describe how much I love that man. He puts up with my crap better than anyone ever could. He is a really good man. The kind of man that I'm so proud to call mine. He has such a servant's heart. He'd help anyONE with anyTHING....no questions asked. His heart was made to serve others and I love that about him. Sometimes I end up nagging and complaining at him more than I actually love on him. Sad....

.....I WILL lose the last 15ish pounds that I gained with Ali. No questions asked....it will be gone. soon. very...very soon.

I could go on, there are lots more things I've been thinking about at the start of this new year. But, my D-man is begging to be read to~

I can't resist leaving you with this sweet pic of my punky...=)

Didn't......

This year for Christmas.....

I didn't say I was going to make my favorite Christmas candies and cookies and then not really do it.....I made LOTS!

I didn't freak out as much about what exactly I was going to get my boys ( I did freak out a tiny bit, just not as much as I usually do)...I tried to remember what Christmas is really all about and not worry so much about whether my boy's liked what they got. I'd so much rather have them understand WHY they are getting Christmas presents then be disappointed that they didn't get exactly what they wanted. They each got 3 gifts and we explained to them how the 3 Kings brought baby Jesus 3 presents when he was born in the stable that night.

I didn't procrastinate sending out thank-you cards to our family in Buffalo....they're ready to be mailed already. People, that's seriously good for me!

I didn't get a family Christmas photo or letter out....AGAIN. Every single year I say I'm going to do it "this year" and then end up saying..."well, I'll for sure do one next year".

I didn't exchange gifts with my hubby. Our gift to each other is that we will be a DEBT free family....soon, very soon! There will be no better gift than that. Being careful about our money "right now" so that later we can relax and enjoy not having bills, bills, bills. Me being able to stay home with my kids and be a mom to them without the constant stress of financial burdens that come with car loans, student loans, etc.etc.etc....will be the.BEST.GIFT.EVER!!

I didn't make cute homemade gift tags and wrap my gifts with beautiful bows (like I always say I want to).....They were wrapped and the receiver's name was written....in pen...right on the wrapping paper. how lame! =(

I didn't take a chill pill when my boys were pushing me to the brink of insanity...sometimes I need to just take a deep breath and walk away. But that is NOT what ends up happening......ugh

We still have two more Christmases to celebrate this year. We're not done yet! ;) When it's all said and done I'll share lots of pics of our super fun Christmas season.

12/13/10

And we finally have snow! The boys are very excited yet very, very bummed that they can't really go outside and play in it since the high is 12 degrees. Just a bit cold. They certainly don't think so, but I beg to differ.

We had a very fun weekend! Friday night we got together with our Small Group and had our annual Christmas party! It was lots of fun. We always do a White Elephant gift exchange and every year people never cease to amaze me at what they can come up with. Hilarious stuff!

Then Saturday Scott spent the morning in the freezing (but very pretty) falling snow, cutting wood for our fireplace with some friends from work. When he got home we rested for awhile and then got ready for our 2nd Christmas party of the weekend. Saturday night we spent the evening with some more great friends at a super fun Wine and Cheese party. It was filled with tons of laughing, good wine and really super yummy food! Doesn't get much more relaxing than that! The weather was terrible but we braved it anyway! We hardly EVER get out without our kids and it was well, well worth the treacherous drive!!! (for those grandmas who are reading - we were totally fine. we took Scott's truck and never had a problem! ;))

And then yesterday was the boys' Christmas Program at church. It was very cute! I'll upload some pictures soon. Reed never even looked up, he messed with a "Silly Band" the entire time his class was supposed to be singing. I mean seriously, he acted like he had no clue where he was and no idea that there were 100 people watching him. It was quite funny. Drew did good but wasn't exactly thrilled about the whole thing. He quietly sang the songs and sort-of-kind-of did some of the actions. Oh my boys, they're funny!!

I'll leave you with a recent picture of all 3 of them. I think they're pretty cute! ;)
Or NOT! Have I ever told you how much I hate this computer? UGH! Can't a picture to upload. I'll try again later!

Randomness...

...homemade pizza on the counter waiting to go in the oven (half pepperoni half cheese just to please everyone)

...bags packed and ready to head out for my other "job", got a Pampered Chef party in Johnston tonight!

...having fun with The PC. nice to make a little money, get out of the house and hang out with other moms

...feeling GREAT these last couple days. had 12, count that...TWELVE injections in my back on Monday for some inflammation. it's making a difference, haven't felt this little amount of pain in YEARS! Praise God for modern medicine!!

...my boys are fighting worse THAN.EVER lately, and I'm kinda embarrassed to admit it, but I'm not talking about a sibling rivalry type argument, I'm talking I had to rip Drew off of Reed today after he kicked him in the shins and then Reed threw a train at Drew's head, it was a full-out brawl! Am I a bad mom, why are they DOING THAT? is that normal "boy"/brother behavior? I remember my dad telling me stories of the "boxing matches" that him and his brothers used to get into, there were bee bee guns involved, boxing gloves, etc (grandma Hoyt, is that true?)

...my sweet Ali is teething....or something...or maybe it's separation anxiety? I can't take more than one step away from her and the entire neighborhood knows she's severely peeved!

...holy crap, Drew just came walking up to me at the computer, HOLDING (almost dropping) Ali...wowsers, that's never happened. better pay closer attention to my kids! hehe

...I have a love affair with boots right now for some reason. ho hum, if ONLY I had money to support my addiction/affair.....darn

...we're doing Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University course right now at a local church. it's nice. I like it. he's funny. there's good info....but, you know what? It's a LOT like being on a diet....lots of will power, lots of saying no, lots of "ooooh, I really want to but I shouldn't". kind of sucks, but is also very exciting to think we'll be DEBT free much sooner than we'd ever planned before doing this!

...I just brewed a pot of coffee at 5 o'clock at night, now I'm drinking it with a spoonful of whip cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. had to do something, that mid-afternoon slump was getting the best of me today.

Enough of my randomness. Sometimes I can't put together a neat, tied-in-a-bow post, but I still want to "write"....

Check out these 3 kiddos. Do they look alike? Who do they look like? It's not the greatest picture...I mean, Scott took it, he's not really into the whole focus/lighting/angle thing...but, they're still cute.

what is WRONG with me?

seriously, i'm super disappointed in myself! first of all let me explain why i'm typing with NO uppercase letters.....i'm too lazy. that's all there is to it. i have ADD and i'm too lazy (and it takes too long) to capitalize my words correctly. okay, back to the subject at hand....what is wrong with me? WHY do i have such good intentions about this blog thing and i cannot seem to keep up with it? i mean i know none of you (probably talking to myself here) even care about this blog but i really wanted this to be kind of like a journal for me, a place to jot down things that the kids were currently doing, their stats, how they are changing and growing, so that i could look back on it in a few years. i have a horrible memory, i can't even remember what ali was doing last month....

ugh, so irritated with myself that i'm too busy and overwhelmed to just STOP and write down some of the things that are going through my head. so, here goes.....

we're moving. well not really, but kind of. we WANT to move, we've been wanting to find an acreage somewhere for a long time and the time has finally come where we're more serious about it. we are sooooo not town people. our neighbors have to hate us, we have crap all over our back yard, we are "those" people, ok not really but sort of....I have to reign scott in and make him put his crap away before the neighbors call the city on us. we need space, our boys need "chores", we so long to be out in the country, it's going to become a reality soon, we hope. we've looked at lots of acreages over the last few months, most of them needs LOTS of work (otherwise we'd never be able to afford them), so it'll be interesting to see what God has in store for us in the months to come....

Drew loves school, he's growing up way too fast. he NEVER wants to be home with us anymore, he's outside with his friends all night long every single night. we have to drag him inside for bedtime at night...he's changed so much in the last few months, such a big kid now, definitely not my little drewbie anymore!! =(

Reed is growing up so fast too, can't believe he's 3 now...crazy how fast time flies. he wants to go everywhere with drew and be just like his big brother although they can seeeeriously fight! and i don't mean "fight", i mean knock down drag out, beat each other up, mom-has-to-pull-us-off-each-other fight....NOT COOL. That only happens every once in awhile and they get in serious trouble, i can't stand it!!

Ali is my little sweet pea. she is definitely a momma's girl right now. she's attached to me, literally....she won't take a bottle. i don't mind too much since i know it'll be gone in a flash and i'll be wishing she was a baby again! she's a little chunker still, growing like a weed. she's been teething this week and eating cereal like a champ!

Scott and I are officially outnumbered! There are days when it seems like no big thang, and other days where i think i might have stepped into the twilight zone. here is how our night went last night:
7pm - Ali goes to bed
7:30- boys bath
8:00- Drew bed
8:30- Reed bed (b/c he took a 3 hr nap in the afternoon)
8:30-10:00 - me trying to fit 500,00 things into the evening that I didn't get accomplished during the day
10:00 - BED, awww, sweet, uninterrupted sleep.....NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
1:30 - Drew comes running into our room saying he had a bad dream, climbs into bed for a little while and then we make him go back to his room (our kids are NOT allowed to sleep in our bed with us)
2:00 - ahhh, okay...going back to sleep now, this should still be a good night sleep, just a short interruption, all is well now.....NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
3:30 - Ali wakes up crying/fussing...sounds "different". i go into her room and can tell her teeth are bothering her, let her fuss for awhile, lay down, get back up, giver her some orajel, lay down, get back up, she's still crying, give her some tylenol, lay back down, listen to her cry/fuss until about 4:30 when she finally goes back to sleep.
4:45-ok, it's a quarter to 5, i can still recover this night, just a few hours of sleep, and i'll be good....NOT SO MUCH
5:50 - reed comes bouncing into our room "i want to watch my shows mommy, is George on yet"?

LORD HELP US, WE'RE OUTNUMBERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
